A Street Project Inside a Larger Programme
The City of Indianapolis is rebuilding the west block of Georgia Street as a park. Work began in February 2025. The block runs from South Capitol Avenue to South Illinois Street in the Wholesale District.
The block sits inside a larger pipeline. Visit Indy counts $3 billion in new tourism-related projects across downtown. The Signia by Hilton Indianapolis and the Indiana Convention Center expansion carry a $710 million figure and a December 2026 opening on Visit Indy's new-developments page.
The street work started first, in February 2025. The buildings follow in late 2026.
The Alignment in the Plans
Merritt Chase states the west block is being renovated in alignment with the new convention center expansion and the 38-story Signia by Hilton hotel. The firm lists the partners as the City of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development and Public Works, the Capital Improvement Board and Indiana Convention Center, Downtown Indy and Visit Indy.
Visit Indy's construction page splits the work by phase. The Q3 2026 phase carries the Signia and the expansion under construction, with all 38 stories in the air as of October 2025. The Q4 2026 phase carries the Signia and the expansion for completion and the full three-block Georgia Street redevelopment for fall 2026.
The Dates as Published
Opening dates for the park differ by publisher, so each carries its publisher here. Merritt Chase's release of 12 February 2025 states the new park environment will open in the spring of 2026. Visit Indy's new-developments page lists the west block opening as October 2026. Its construction page schedules the full three-block redevelopment by fall 2026.
December 2026 carries the Signia by Hilton Indianapolis and the convention center expansion on Visit Indy's new-developments page, and the fourth quarter of 2026 on its construction page.
What the Sequence Sells
The expansion adds 143,500 square feet of event space, including a 50,000-square-foot ballroom, on Visit Indy's new-developments page. The venue's expansion page states the Signia will carry 90,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 50,455-square-foot Grand Ballroom, and that the expansion makes two citywide conventions at one time possible.
The venue's expansion page puts the new-convention impact at up to $232 million and the construction at 2,500 jobs, with 400 new hotel jobs.
The connected package grows with the two buildings. Visit Indy counts 13 properties and 5,500 hotel rooms under one roof once they open. The venue publishes 7,100 hotel rooms downtown and 4,700 rooms on the skywalk network.
A planner booking into 2027 reads three park dates from three publishers and one building date from two pages of the same source. The inventory behind those dates is the city's own count.
What the Record Does Not Carry
No published document carries an event capacity, a fee schedule, an insurance requirement or a load-in window for the finished block. No source states the number of events the space will hold.
Four items stay open for a property or a capital partner on the corridor. They are the confirmed opening date for the west block, the permitted footprint and capacity of each space, the coach drop-off and load allocation, and the first season's event calendar.
