Kumoricon Fills 626 Staff Posts From a Nine-Month Ladder

Kumoricon ran 2024 on 626 volunteers and 11,954 paid members, and dates every hire by level. The 2026 edition runs 13 to 15 November at the Oregon Convention Center.

Kumoricon ran its 2024 edition on 626 staff. That year the convention recorded 11,954 total paid members and 12,304 badgeholders. The ratio is 19.1 paying attendees for each person on the crew.

Altonimbus Entertainment produces the convention as an Oregon nonprofit public benefit 501(c)(3). Its footer carries one line on every page: Kumoricon is a 100% volunteer-run event, including executive staff and board.

The 2026 edition runs 13 to 15 November in Halls A-A1-B-C-D-E at the Oregon Convention Center.

Two routes into the crew

A staff volunteer holds a titled position with Altonimbus and holds voting rights. The return is convention access, expanded benefits, a vote in membership meetings and a vote in board elections. The organiser states that staff receive no monetary compensation for the work.

An attendee volunteer buys a full membership and then donates at least four hours. The rewards arrive in steps. A badge ribbon comes first. A branded lanyard arrives at four hours, a coupon for a complimentary membership the following year at eight, a limited-edition pin at twelve, a $30 food voucher at sixteen and a limited-edition t-shirt at twenty.

Sixteen donated hours return a $30 food voucher. The ladder prices the casual hour beside the titled post.

A sign-up calendar nine months long

Kumoricon dates staff sign-up by level. The published cut-offs for new staff run: L6 and L5 on 31 March 2026, L4 on 13 May, L3 on 13 September, L2 on 13 October and L1 on 7 November.

Read against the Friday doors on 13 November, those dates sit 227, 184, 61, 31 and 6 days out. The senior posts close 227 days before the show. The junior posts close six days before the doors.

One consequence sits under the ladder. Any staff member registered and ratified after 11 September 2026 receives a generic, department-specific badge with space for personalisation. That date falls 63 days before the convention, and the organiser publishes it as a line separate from the cut-off list.

The organiser also states that it will not sign staff up at the convention from 2026. A candidate who misses the cut-off is directed to the attendee volunteer booth.

An interview sits before the roster

Joining takes five published steps. Browse the open positions. Submit the application form. Read the staff policies. Complete staff registration online or on paper. Send the parent permission and liability release form if the applicant is under 18.

The position chart diagrams every staff post, shows which post reports to whom, and marks each one open or filled. The same page states that applying involves an interview with the relevant manager or director.

The organiser runs a recruiting channel that costs nothing. Its monthly membership meetings are open to the public, and a candidate can attend one and talk to department heads before applying. A guest already holding an attendee membership can move across to staff after approval, and the organiser refunds the event membership on that upgrade.

The rules are published before the shift

Staff registration runs against a public policy set. The site lists a staff policies summary, a staff registration agreement, a harassment policy, an adjudication policy, a conflict of interest policy and a whistleblower and non-retaliation policy. The larger policy list sits behind a staff login.

The volunteer route carries its own sequence. Pre-register for a membership, submit the volunteer registration form, then wait for review. Once approved, a volunteer lead makes contact to agree schedule preferences and departments. A team that pre-sets the schedule sends a notification by the Wednesday before the convention.

Four practices a hotel operation can borrow

Publish the position chart. A recruitment notice placed against a diagram of posts shows an applicant where the job sits and who the job reports to. Kumoricon marks open posts on the same chart it uses to describe the organisation.

Date the intake by level. A cut-off ladder lets an operation settle its senior roles months out and fill the floor days out. Every applicant gets a date on the calendar.

Give the crew a vote. A titled position with a vote ties the person to the body that runs the convention. The executive staff and the board sit on the same unpaid footing as the door crew.

Publish the rules before the shift. Harassment, conflict of interest, adjudication and non-retaliation each carry a public document. A seasonal hire can read the standard before the first shift.

The room block closed on 21 October

The hotels page carries a stamp of 28 March 2026 and four official rates. Hyatt Regency Portland at $235 a night, Courtyard Portland Downtown/Convention Center at $214, Hotel Eastlund at $199 and DoubleTree by Hilton at $185. The page states a reservation deadline of 21 October 2026, and that date has passed.

The page also states that Portland occupancy tax is 16.5 percent and that each rate excludes taxes and fees. Taxed, the four rates run $273.78, $249.31, $231.84 and $215.53 a night.

A card holds a room and is not charged until arrival. A change or cancellation carries no fee at 72 hours or more before check-in. Altonimbus may receive a small portion of the reservation fee, and rooms booked direct may not be counted toward the block.

The staff rate and the booking instructions remain unpublished on that page. Staff are told to watch for an email from the hotel team.

What the file shows a reservations desk

The crew pipeline is dated to the day and the room block closed five months before the doors. The final intake, L1, closes on 7 November, 17 days after the block deadline.

Demand between 13 and 15 November therefore arrives with four published rates, a 16.5 percent occupancy tax and no block to join. The organiser names Hyatt Regency Portland as a venue hotel for the 2024 edition and lists four hotels for 2026.

The record carries a dated intake, a rewards ladder priced in hours and a published rule set. Each one costs a document and a date.
