The Volunteer Body
Litquake publishes its volunteer figure on its own volunteer page. The line reads: more than 300 volunteers donate their time and expertise to produce each year's Litquake festival.
Lit Crawl SF is one night of that festival. It runs Saturday 24 October 2026 in the Mission District, from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. The afterparty runs 9:00pm to 11:00pm at The Drawing Room: Annex, 599 Valencia St.
The 300-plus figure covers the festival year. No page publishes a volunteer headcount for the crawl night alone.
The Roles the Page Names
The volunteer page lists the tasks in one sentence: greeting attendees, working the box office, helping with book signings, and much more.
The page publishes no shift start time, no shift length and no count of volunteers per role. It carries no venue rota.
What a Shift Returns
The page names the return: a t-shirt, a tote bag, the opportunity to attend events you are working free of charge, and undying gratitude.
The free-attendance term attaches to the events a volunteer works.
The Sign-Up Route
The page describes one route onto the roster. A volunteer fills out an information form. The volunteer coordinator makes contact when it is time to sign up for shifts, and the coordinator schedules a brief informal training session.
The page's own button reads I'D LIKE TO VOLUNTEER, and it links to an InitLive form at app.initlive.com.
The page states the shift pool: shifts during Litquake and Lit Crawl, occasional volunteer positions at events through the year, and opportunities to help behind the scenes.
Three terms are absent from the page: an application deadline, a minimum age and a minimum shift count.
The Shift Load the Crawl Adds
The crawl's published programme puts 51 sessions into 21 phase venues between 5:00pm and 9:00pm. Three starts carry the sessions: 20 at 5:00pm, 17 at 6:30pm and 14 at 8:00pm. Entry 52 is the afterparty.
The organiser's floor of 300-plus volunteers divides across the published programme. On the list of 24 addresses the figure is 12.5 volunteers per venue. On the 51 sessions it is under six a session. On all 52 entries it is just under six an entry.
Each of those figures is arithmetic on the organiser's own floor and the published programme. No page publishes a split of the volunteer body across the crawl night, the festival and the year-round events.
The Scale the Shifts Serve
The crawl page carries the drawing figure: 250+ authors and close to 5,000 fans, with the first edition dated to 2004. The same page calls the night the world's largest free pop-up literary event.
The venue list holds 24 addresses. Twenty-one sit on the phase route. The phase addresses sit inside a footprint 1.41 miles north to south and 0.55 miles east to west, measured straight-line between the published street addresses.
Entry is free. The schedule host carries the terms: no RSVPs are necessary, just show up, and seating and space are first come, first serve. The organiser has switched off its My Schedule tool, so no page records which session a volunteer is assigned to.
A greeter works a room with no list, no held seat and a published first-come rule.
What the Page Leaves Open
The volunteer page publishes no crawl-night headcount, no shift start, no shift length, no role count, no per-venue roster and no named volunteer.
Two published numbers bound the staffing read. The organiser's floor is 300-plus volunteers for the festival year. The crawl's own programme is 51 sessions across 21 phase venues in four hours, plus a two-hour afterparty.
Litquake runs its office at 988 Market St, Suite 700, San Francisco, CA 94102. The phone number is (415) 440-4177, and the volunteer page carries info@litquake.org.
